Over the past two months, I’ve given several talks on technology futures at local universities.
One question (still) keeps getting asked about the “winner” of Microsoft vs. Open Source or more specifically Linux vs. Windows.

While i tend to be binary about things, in the short term it’s hard to see a technical “winner” between these two platforms. At the server level, both work, on the desktop one has an enormous lead and mobile is still in flux.
In the long-term however, the question of platform becomes more interesting in 10, 20 and 30 year scenarios. On the desktop Microsoft has more share to loose than to gain, so it’s not unreasonable to predict some erosion there. On the real growth areas of mobile, devices, sensors, etc., what will be the core OS on these 100 billion volume devices?

After using Blogo, I decided to spend some money ($25.00) to purchase the software. I like the UI, especially full screen mode when you want to temporarily hide the clutter on the desktop and jot down a quick update to the blog or Twitter.
It’s very useful, and would welcome an iPhone equal from Brainjuice, the company that created Blogo.
Well worth the purchase price if you spend time blogging or using Twitter.

Back in the earliest days of blogs around 2001, I jumped on Radio-8 and started to pump out a daily update on a wide collection of thoughts, book reviews, technology toys and so-forth. Shortly after, comments and e-mails would arrive that required time to read, analyze and reply. The result was the blog became more time consuming than it was worth. Besides, my needs are already met for communications with a fairly sophisticated set-up of rules, filters, mail list, etc. on e-mail, a preferred medium of exchange.
So, I largely abandoned writing a blog, but quickly became consumed by reading them, and continue to do so with two great tools: NetNewsWire and filtered via AideRSS. Indispensable for following 600 or so blogs built up on a wide variety of interest over time. (more…)

Lately I’ve been taking more pictures than usual. We upgraded to the new HP R707 digital camera and it’s made taking pictures a bit more fun again. In order to easily share the odd photo, I took a good look around the current crop of sharing tools and that lead me to one in particular… Flickr. Flickr is an image sharing tool and community with decent mobile features created by Vancouver game developer Ludicorp.
It may be the secondary result of their game background, but Flickr is easy and cute with quality basics of getting the photos uploaded and shared. There is a free and fee service depending on your needs; both work equally well. The R707 lets me choose to upload a photo at the time of taking it and send direct to Flickr (via e-mail update); which is a nice combination. I’ve also uploaded from the Sony T600 and it’s been a great experience thus far.
Obvious future for services like this are voice annotation and video, hopefully we’ll see that in the future as both the cameras, corders and phones ship with sound / video as default features.
